The last public hanging happened in 1863. The last man executed was Edward Cooper, a 30-year-old murderer at Baschurch. Shrewsbury Prison also housed notable and famous inmates. Robert Welch, one great train robber, spent some time in one of the prison cells. Another inmate was “Doctor Death” Sidney Noble.
