Haunted sightings 👻
* The marching airmen – Visitors have reported hearing the sound of boots marching in formation late at night, despite nobody being there. This legend probably stems from the thousands of recruits who trained at the camp between 1939 and 1963.
* The shadow figure near the old cookhouse chimney – Several local investigators have described seeing a dark figure moving between the trees near the remaining memorial chimney at Stanmore Country Park.
* Voices from the former accommodation blocks – Before many of the buildings were demolished or converted, workers reportedly heard voices, doors opening and closing, and unexplained footsteps. These stories have circulated locally for years, although none has ever been officially verified.
* The “woman in blue” legend – Some people believe that the spirit of a former Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) recruit still walks the site. The station served as a training depot for WAAF personnel during the war, which may explain how the story originated.
* Strange lights in the woodland – Paranormal groups investigating the area have reported unexplained lights among the trees surrounding the old camp. Skeptics point out that wildlife, torches, and reflections from nearby roads could easily explain many of these sightings.
The station itself opened in 1939 and trained thousands of recruits during the Second World War and the years that followed. Although there was never a runway, the camp covered a huge area and housed thousands of personnel. Today, much of the site forms part of Stanmore Country Park.
